Going cruisin'

I probably forgot to mention this but Bob and I and my whole family are going on a cruise to Mexico the first week in February. We fly to Long Beach, CA then board the ship. From there we sail to Puerto Vallarta, Mazatlan, and Cabo San Lucas. We've never been on a cruise before so it should be an adventure. I'm always whining that we never go anywhere so when our neighbors suggested we go along with them and a group of their friends, I said to Bob "we are going!" He had no choice but to go along to keep the peace in our house. I then invited my two sisters and brother and their spouses and they all immediately signed up. My dad was going to come but he is still recovering from hernia surgery.

I have been dieting like mad because I want to fit into my summer clothes. We had to get Bob a passport which was a bit of a hassle since he was born in Canada (his parents lived on the US/Canadian border and their hosptial was closer). He doesn't have a birth certificate, but it turned out that he has a US certificate of citizenship that he got as a child, so we got the passport faster than I expected.

Of course, you can all guess my first concern about packing.... what books should I bring. And I'm not sure what we will be doing on the cruise so I'm not sure how many books to brings along. I like to just sit by the pool and read but Bob gets bored just sitting around. Maybe I can send him off on an excursion to the Tequila factory.

I'd like to try snorkling again and maybe a little shopping but other than that I'm happy just swimming and sunning myself (with lots of sunscreen of course) . Oh, yeah, and eating. It's probably going to be a shock to my system with all the snow we've had lately. But then again they've had snow in California so I'll feel right at home (grrrrrr).

I've never gone a cruise either but everyone I've ever known to go has loved it. Have a great time!

Oooh have fun Renee! I've always wanted to go on a cruise, but to Alaska.

I know, trust a Canadian to want to go someplace cold. LOL

Ames: We'd like to do that Alaska cruise someday, but it has to be in summer time. I want to see the glaciers before they all melt :)

Have a great time, it'll be a lot better than being stuck on the freeway in a snow storm.

What is it with Canadians and that border? My grandfather was technically an American because he was born on the New Hampshire side of the border though he spent his entire childhood in Canada.

Hey! It's the American's (well - the administration's) fault! We were sailing swimmingly well as the two countries being best buds when The US Administration decided that "Hey! Let's make sure that Canadians have to have a passport when the enter the US!" My sister is in a real quandry! She's lived in the US for 2 year now. And with this new regulation going into effect next week - she needs a passport to get into the US - but she's there already. But if she leaves, she might not be allowed back in because she doesn't have her green card (or whatever it's called) yet. She's applied and approved, but they lost the paperwork. So she can't come to Canada to get a passport because she can't leave the US. And she needs someone official here like a CA, doctor or lawyer who has known her for 2 years to vouch for her - but she hasn't lived here for over 2 years now. I'm really bitter about the whole thing. Mind you I got a passport a month or so ago - but still..... It would be like being frisked at the door when you go to your neighbours for a coffee.
And now that I've finished my rant for the day...

Renee! That sounds wonderful!!! I'd love to go on a cruise. And the book thing *g* You'll probably take a whole bunch and only get one or two read.

Ah, good for you!! You can send hubby off with the family and friends while you soak up the rays. Bob and I don't vacation the same - I need to sit by the water for 5 straight days doing nothing but getting up to eat. Bob needs to visit every nook and cranny of every place we've ever gone. Thus, I now have a pool and don't have to go anywhere ;)

Pack 12 books - you'll never get through them all but at least you'll have a taste of what you might want. Okay, I pack twelve books for overnighters too.

I'm so jealous! We last took a cruise about 18 years ago - PK (Pre-kids). Have a terrific time, eat all the wonderful food and don't feel guilty - you'll diet after.

Thanks, Dara. I plan to :)
